One of the primary hormones that affect weight management is insulin. Insulin is a blood sugar regulator.
Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas’s beta cells, which located near the stomach. The islets of Langerhans are tiny clusters of beta cells which was found throughout the pancreas of the human body. Insulin is then created thus released into bloodstream, where it circulates throughout the body. Is insulin a vital hormone? Yes ! Insulin is a vital hormone that has a variety of functions in the body. Moreover, insulin’s activities are primarily focused on glucose, lipid and protein metabolism. Insulin also controls the growth and other body cells. Besides, insulin is required for the human body to use glucose as an energy source.
If we have insulin resistance, our body cells will no longer respond to the insulin’s command. This resistance by the cells cause glucose to remain high in the bloodstream. Also, people with insulin resistance will have large possibilities to experience difficulty in losing weight. Insulin resistance is associated with high blood pressure, large waist circumferences, low HDL cholesterol, high triglycerides and high fasting glucose which puts us at risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes.

Our thyroid gland is a tiny butterfly-shaped gland which located at the base of the human skull. Some experts called it as the “ body’s gearbox”.

Hypothyroidism means our thyroid is not making sufficient amout of the hormone, thyroxine. The thyroid regulates the body’s metabolism to control our weight. If we suffer from hypothyroidism, we have to work harder than the people without thyroid disease to lose fat. Researches at University of Birmingham in England has proved that hypothyroidism can cause us to gain weight. It is commonly develops in adult women, especially those above 50. People with hypothyroidism should avoid millet and highly processed food such as hotdogs, cakes and cookies.
Nonetheless, hypothyroidism causes our heart rate to slow down and our heartbeat to weaken, making our heart ineffective in pumping blood out to our body. As a result, it will cause us having shortness of breath during or after exercise. This disorder can raise blood pressure by narrowing our arteries. Yet, high cholesterol is a side effect of this hypothyroidism. As a result, our body requires less energy and any excess calories we consumed will be stored as fat. Excessive dieting can lower metabolism even further.
In spite of that, iodine deficiency is a leading cause of thyroid problem. Without the adequate iodine, the production of thyroid hormone will be slowed. Well, the signs of iodine deficiency are quite common, that are fatigue, constipation, dry skin, muscle weakness and elevated blood cholesterol levels.
Menopause occurs when a women hasn’t had a period in 12 months and is no longer to be able conceive naturally. It usually starts between the ages of 45 to 55, but it can still happen at any time before or beyond that. Menopause can bring on unpleasant symptoms like hot flashes, weight gain, night sweats and also loss of libido. Menopause does not require medical therapy for the majority of women.
The hormones involved in menopause are estrogen and progesterone. Hormonal imbalance may change the way a woman’s body breaks down and stores fat, thus leading to more fat accumulating at the belly. During menopause, estrogen is more dominant than progesterone which results in :
• Slowing down the activity of the thyroid gland.
• Activates a fat storing enzyme called lipoprotein lipase.
• Lowers the metabolic rate of the body , resulting in weight gain, blood sugar imbalance and fatigue.
• Estrogen dominance produces excessive weight, usually centered between the waist and the knees.
On the other hand, progesterone is favorable to management as it helps stimulate fat burning, reduce water retention, improve energy levels and improve thyroid function.
